The logistics envelope allows you to group several customs declarations together to save time when crossing the border between United Kingdom and France.

A new app developed as part of the smart border, is now available on douane.gouv : the logistics envelope

Whether you are a company, a customs broker or a carrier, you can access to this app from your computer or your smartphone without any login.

The logistics envelope allows you to group several customs declarations - for both import and export - under a single document in order to save time when crossing the border, especially at the Calais/Dover Strait.

In the frame of the re-establishment of the border between the United Kingdom and the European Union, French Customs has developped an information system allowing businesses to automate the border crossing by HGV. This innovative solution will be applicable at all points of entry/exit to/from Calais region and more broadly of Channel-North Sea.

French customs developed a computer system known as "The Smart Border" to keep trade flowing between the United Kingdom and France, despite the reestablishment of customs clearance at the border.

The border between France and the UK is unique due to the short crossing times and the specificities of the flow.

Nearly 5 million trucks cross the Channel / North Sea each year to transport goods via the Channel Tunnel and 8 ports of entry covering 1,500 km of maritime border
More than 80% of flows between continental Europe and the United Kingdom pass through a few border crossing points
The economic model of the tunnel and the ferries is based on the speed and fluidity of the flows, with very short crossing times and the majority of the flows being "accompanied" by the drivers.
Some infrastructures did not have control areas and structures (customs offices, sanitary and phytosanitary inspection centers...) and required a reorganisation of the space

To adress these challenges, French customs designed an innovative solution based on new processes and interconnected information systems.

What is the smart border and how to prepare to use it?

All the questions were answered during our webinar organised December 3rd, 2020. During this webinar, a presentation of the smart border was entirely made in English by Caroline de Saussure, Brexit Project Manager and Hervé Mathevet, Customs Attaché at the French Embassy in the United Kingdom.
